Composer’s Notes 

I have long liked the Hymn Tune "Engelberg" (Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, 1852 – 1924)

Random factoid: In 1882, aged 29, Stanford was one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music.

As I started out to write another "opener" of original music,  I crafted the first motif with no idea what the "contrasting part" would be. As is not uncommon in my creative process, this tune "hit me",  and whilst not even sitting at the keyboard, I "knew" it was going to work. I was delighted in the contrast and the compatibility in the chord structure and feel. 

On first glance, Engelberg can be expressed rather reverently and softly. But I see the words and music also supporting a more triumphant style. 

I was delighted in the serendipitous fit of overlaying of the two melodies, especially since I wrote the original bit long before even considering the hymn tune.

Hopefully you will enjoy this short but festive opener.
