Oh No! I Forgot The Pianist... - Solo Flute

As a flautist, one is accustomed to counting or skipping over bars of rest within a piece of music. On the other hand,your accompanying pianist plays the entire work without lengthy silences. The only rest your pianist has to endure isduring your cadenza. As a generalization, pianists get all the fun! For orchestral and concert band flautists, multiple barrests are standard. I began adapting flute pieces that 'stole' parts of piano accompaniments or lines of other orchestral instruments to fill such 'gaps'. In this way, it was possible to play entire works minus the black holes. In Bach's contrapuntal complexities, I had a rich source of 'melody' to arrange in infinite variety. I could even give the flute snippets from the bass line or the glorious florid trumpet passages that typify Baroque music. In the absence of a pianist, or orchestra, I could entertain without explaining bars of silence. A few pieces are transcriptions while others are 'arrangements' in the term's most basic meaning. More importantly, the pieces I gathered reflect the practical aspects of studying the flute (tonguing, articulation, scales, arpeggios, tone, expression, stamina development, et al.). While the Bach pieces herein lend themselves to the improvement of articulation, tonguing and endurance, the contrasting Handel, Faure and Telemann pieces are ideal for developing tone.
